Karachi Factory Fire Incident

While media is busy in covering our political guru’s and Quaid’s visits to fire burnt factories and meetings with their families in Karachi, this 6 year old kid asked me a very simple question, why all these big-guns visit these places only after an incident? why don’t they visit such places proactively to prevent losses. After every incident, they assure investigations will be taken place, justice will be done, yet another incident happens. Are they making us fools?

He’s a small kid, his mind keeps on wondering and he can come up with these silly questions. For, he doesn’t know anything about democracy and how it works. A minister or a political leader is a busy person, our legislators and office bearers have a busy schedule and have lots of important matters to take care of so they cannot waste their precious time in visiting these small factories or meet these small people when they are alive. See how many efforts our leaders, office bearers and legislators are putting in after recent floods, terrorism and other claimities. Then there’s a priority list. Anyone could easily tell whats more important in responding to american call or saving life of a person being burnt alive. Obviously it’s the call, for the reason, governments are being fed by Americans and these poor people merely are voters and nothing else. Everyday sets a new record for incompetence, corruption and misery for Pakistanis.
We’ve been hearing this since 4 years now that ‘steps being taken to stabilize and strengthen democracy’, and while doing so, they neglect everything and everyone else. Regardless of everything, all they focus is to generate leads that benefit them, their family and friends, all in all the elite class. All we hear is ‘appropriate action will be taken’ or ‘we’ll make sure nothing will happen again’ yet no improvement witnessed. All crocodiles busy in collecting their share of the profit and crafting policies and laws that eventually protects them or their interests in government, nothing for a common man! Hardly any of the office bearers know a little about the portfolio he/she is looking after. They don’t understand the business and its requirements, so they don’t bother bringing in any innovation, advancement and thus all our industries and ministries are stuck in past, working on procedures defined in 1950’s that unable to cope with challenges of the day.
Basic thing is how we take-up an issue and go about it, and we lack that. Whatever the issue maybe, media creates such a hype that officials instead of paying attention to the matter, put more focus on media and interviews etc. As soon as the news came out of factory fire, there came statement that this is an act of extortionists and how they have been pressurizing for protection money etc and reportedly the owner flew of the country while everyone else was busy in building their stories. New factory will be built, material loss will be compensated but those who lost their lives will never come back, hundreds of families are finished, and have no reason to live anymore. Although it seems normal to have that many deaths in a country where half the men are born just to be the victims of such incidents.
Either we don’t have laws that protect all the stake holders for common good, or there’s no implementation, check and balance. If there’s any check, it is bypassed either by corruption or influences in government. So, issues like this arise. Pity that we don’t have backup plans or systems to support/manage/resolve such issues. Had there been a proactive approach and a proper check & balance, there would have been much less losses. We have hundreds and thousands of such factories in Pakistan that are a continuous threat to many human lives. Apart from factory issue, same goes with PIA. Our aviation industry has been on verge of collapsing with 2-3 private planes crashed and every 2nd week a PIA flight emergency landing or anything of the sort, all due to negligence, incompetence and corruption.
This negligence, incompetence and corruption have claimed more lives than that of terrorism. Our biggest problem is this, if we don’t act proactively, that day isn’t very far when these so-called leaders and Quaids fall victim to it. I don’t know any of the victims personally or remotely, but they touched my heart. It seems as if I was among them, I can feel their pain, it wasn’t the factory that burnt, it was my heart. And I fear if I don’t do anything about it now, I would become the next victim.
