About The Quran

Quran is last of the four divine books (Torah, Zabur, Bible & Quran) and manuscript of Islamic religion. Quran is Allah Almighty’s manifestations revealed on Last & Final Prophet Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ through Archangel Gabriel in Arabic language over a period of 23 years. Quran testifies previous divine books & Prophets and Finality of Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ Prophethood. Abu Huraira RA reported, The Prophet said, “Every Prophet was given miracles because of which people believed, but what I have been given, is Divine Inspiration which Allah has revealed to me. So I hope that my followers will outnumber the followers of the other Prophets on the Day of Resurrection.” Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 61, Number 504

Quran narrates tales of ancient people & Prophets for variety of lessons in case study format and explains matters in detail and with examples for learning of common people. Quran is the knowledge base of Islamic framework with all the orders, revelations and comprehensive details of do’s & don’ts. Quran is complete code of life; all the manifestations from religious to social code of conduct are encapsulated in it.

Muslims firmly believe each and every word of Quran to be true and from Allah Almighty as Quran states in opening verses of second chapter “This is the Book (the Quran), whereof there is no doubt, guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqoon [the pious]”. Muslims also believe that Allah SWT protects Quran as stated in 14th volume:

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ

Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an and indeed, We will be its guardian.

Quran revealed from time to time, sometimes a complete chapter and sometimes only a few verses as required on occasion. Many of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ companions served as scribes and record revelations. Quran was in scattered written form (parchments, palm-leaf stalks, thin stones) until collected as a single book during tenure of third Caliph Hazrat Usman RA. Here are some facts about Quran:

  • Quran was revealed over 23 years (sometimes complete chapter sometimes few verses)
  • Quran has 77,797 words, 6236 verses and 558 Rukuh
  • Quran is divided into thirty volumes and 7 portions for ease of recitation
  • Quran has total 114 Chapters of which 86 revealed in Makkah and 28 revealed in Madinah
  • Quran has 14 verses where prostration is compulsory during recitation / listening
  • 29 Chapters begin with abbreviated words (يسٓ, نٓ, كٓهيعٓصٓ, طسٓمٓ, الٓمٓصٓ, الٓم).
  • As per Islamic concept, these abbreviated words carry special meanings, which Allah has not revealed.

Understanding, reciting and learning Quran is encouraged and obligatory on Muslims. Allah SWT emphasizes recitation of Quran and its eternal benefits in Surah Fatir:

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَتْلُونَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ وَأَقَامُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَنفَقُوا مِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ سِرًّا وَعَلَانِيَةً يَرْجُونَ تِجَارَةً لَّن تَبُورَ (29)

Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a profit that will never perish –

Hazrat Usman RA reported in Sahih Bukhari, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated, “Best amongst you is the one who learns Quran and teaches it”.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated: “Verily the one who recites the Quran beautifully, smoothly and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward” (Sahih Al-Bukhari).

Abdullah Bin Masud RA reported that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated, “Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that “Alif, Laam, Meem” is a letter, rather I am saying that “Alif” is a letter, “laam” is a letter and “meem” is a letter.”

Quran will intercede for us on day of judgment. He who reads at least 10 verses a day is not recorded amongst forgetful ones. Also daily recitation saves us from Hypertension, stress & anxiety and protects from dangerous animals. Here’s a compilation of Quranic verses, attributed as “Manzil” which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his companions. Reciting Manzil daily safeguards & protects from all types of hazards including metaphysical threats.

Under this section I will share chapter wise Introduction, brief historic background and contextual references. Idea is to share knowledge and develop reader’s interest in Quran by helping him understand the context of chapters & verses, topics and manifestations in easy language. Since Quran is in Arabic and unfortunately, most of us do not comprehend. Hence, we only recite the words and miss-out on the underlying message; it is the case during prayers.

As a reader, when we know about the context, meaning and topic we will have more interest in reciting / listening hence the overall experience will become more spiritually engaging and beneficial. May Allah SWT accept our noble deeds.

I will keep on updating this section chapter wise. Since there are 114 chapters, it will take a while to cover whole Quran. Please do share feedback / update / correct where necessary.
